date lab 2022

Amanda Edge '22, Maren Knutson '22, and Lindsay Lian '22

The cherry blossoms have bloomed, the breeze is warm, summer is approaching, and love is in the air. It may be the start of “Hot Girl Summer” for some, but for our SSSAS Seniors, now may be the start of a lifelong relationship (or at least a date to prom). It’s time for Date Lab!

How did we match these couples, you ask? It was merely a feeling; we felt those butterflies and just knew - we also sent out a survey to the entire senior class in an attempt to find each respondent their “perfect match.” We asked questions from “what’s your favorite book?” to “how organized are you?” to try to match up each senior with someone who would complement their strengths, fulfill their wishes for a partner, and make a good story to tell your friends the next day at lunch.

After sifting through a large pool of competitive candidates, all eager to find that special someone, we matched together four couples who stood out as very compatible and sent them on a first date, thereby planting a seed for their blossoming love.

And soon after, the lovebirds were spreading their wings!

Whether your favorite trope is enemies to lovers, star-crossed lovers, an unlikely pair, or forbidden love, these couples’ love stories will be sure to exceed your expectations. So buckle up and get ready for the tales of SSSAS Date Lab 2022.

Our first pairing, Bronwyn (hot girl summer) and Chris (certified lover boy) went out to dinner at The Wharf in old town. Chris, naturally, was the perfect gentleman. He drove all the way from Alexandria to the faraway land of Great Falls. (Rumor has it he picked her up in a horse-drawn carriage)

What did you talk about on the date?

Chris: Like everything, we both play lacrosse. Talked about our families, school

Bronwyn: Everything. Family, sports, friends, school

Did you find out anything new about the other person?

Chris: Yeah, she has a big family. I didn’t know that. They live all across the world because they’re going to school and stuff

Bronwyn: I’d never really had a full conversation with him before so everything I learned was new.

Was the date what you were expecting? Why or why not?

Chris: Um, not really, I thought it was going to be kinda awkward to be honest, but it wasn’t awkward, it was nice

Bronwyn: I was really nervous, but it wasn’t as awkward as I thought it was going to be.

Did anything surprise you about your date/ the other person?

Chris: How far she lives. She lives really far away

Bronwyn: The fact that he was willing to pick me up even though it was very out of the way.

Did anything funny happen on the date?

Chris: I don’t think anything in particular

Bronwyn: I mean, there was laughter, but I can’t think of anything specific

How would you rate the food 1-10?

Chris: Like a 9

Bronwyn: 8

How would you rate the conversation 1-10?

Chris: 8

Bronwyn: 9

How would you rate the date overall 1-10?

Chris: 9

Bronwyn: 9

Would you go on another date with them? Why or why not?

Chris: I probably would. I thought it was fun. I thought it was a cool experiment, too

Bronwyn: Yes, I would

Any final thoughts?

Chris: No it was fun

Bronwyn:

After the date: Chris and Bronwyn were seen together at prom, Bronwyn sporting an emerald green gown, and Chris in his tux, accessorized with a cummerbund. Here they are, the sportiest couple of the night!

Our next set of love birds, Mary V and Silas (an arranged match from parents who worked together), took to the city for a glamorous night at Nobu in DC (straight out of Gossip Girl, I know). The reason for their destination, you ask? “We thought it’d be funny, and then other people tried to copy us with an expensive restaurant, but I think we were the only ones who went to a really expensive one…” or so Mary V thought.

What did you talk about on the date?

Silas: We did a lot of people watching. There were a lot of interesting people in Nobu. We talked about the surveys we filled out to do It. I figured out Mary V doesn't read any books or listen to music for that matter.

Mary V: It’s like a week later now, so it’s hard to remember, but we talked about a lot of stuff. He watches a lot of movies and I watch no movies. We people watched in the restaurant- lot of weird people around us. We also talked about other people’s date labs, like who was going and doing what.

Did you find out anything new about the other person?

Silas: At one point, we figured out that our parents work together. That was interesting. But, yeah, she told me that she listens to the same 50 songs over and over again, which is interesting because on that day, I had probably already listened to, like, 60 new songs.

Mary V: That he’s lived in a bunch of different places like Wisconsin and a few others.

Was the date what you were expecting? Why or why not?

Silas: Yeah. Honestly, I think it went better than I was expecting it to. I actually had a lot of fun, and I was expecting to have a lot of fun, but it was really fun. And it was fun that it was on a Sunday because I had the whole weekend to forget about it and then remember that I had it and be like, “oh, let's go!”

Mary V: I was expecting us to get along well, but I was surprised at how well we got along.

Did anything funny happen on the date?

Silas: [redacted] (Editor’s note: ask someone if you really want to know)

Mary V: He ate the edamame with the skin on because he said it was a way to eat more salt like it had more surface area to eat the soy sauce.

How would you rate the food 1-10?

Silas:  I give it like an 8-8.5. It was really good. It was low-key worth the money.

Mary V: 11

How would you rate the conversation 1-10?

Silas: 10. Good chop.

Mary V: probably a 10

How would you rate the date overall 1-10?

Silas: Honestly, as someone who hasn't been on a crazy amount of actual dinner dates, it's got to go pretty high up there. So you have, like, 9-10.

Mary V: Well, average those two would make it a 10.5

Would you go on another date with them? Why or why not?

Silas: Yeah, because, honestly, it was fun. And honestly, I'm into getting dressed up and going out. I don't care what the occasion is. I'm always down to do it.

Mary V: Yeah, I mean I don’t know why I wouldn’t. Maybe not back to Nobu. It was a little bit expensive, and I don’t think it ended up being covered by the school, so sorry Silas’s dad!

The excitement from that date, however, does not equal that from our next couple: Gavin and Kelsey (unexpected lovers), who fueled up at Ruth Chris’ Steak House before completing an Escape Room afterward.

Where did you go on the date, and why?

Gavin: We went to Ruth Chris and then we went to an Escape Room afterward. At the Escape Room we were supposedly waiting for this dude in his dining room and he was gonna eat us or something

Kelsey: We went to Ruth Chris and an escape room after

What did you talk about on the date?

Gavin: We talked about college family, STEM, we’re both interested in math and science.

Kelsey: College, family, friends, what we like to do in our free time

Did you find out anything new about the other person?

Gavin: Yeah. I didn’t really know anything about Kelsey so I found out a lot about her. I didn’t know she was interested in science and math and stuff like that.

Kelsey: Yeah…yeah, we have sciences and stuff in common. I’m training for my pilot's license and he’s going to school for aerospace engineering

Was the date what you were expecting? Why or why not?

Gavin: I had no expectations, but I had a really good time.

Kelsey: I thought it was going to be more awkward and that we weren’t going to have anything in common

Did anything surprise you about your date/ the other person?

Gavin: How expensive the dinner was (Editor’s note: Gavin and Kelsey won in the money-spending category with just their dinner alone… sorry Mary V. and Silas)

Kelsey: That we had some things in common, he’s really smart

Did anything funny happen on the date?

Gavin: I was eating the steak and I inhaled a piece of the steak and started coughing everywhere

Kelsey: The escape room was funny because it was kinda hard so we were both looking dumb, we had to ask for a lot of clues

How would you rate the food 1-10?

Gavin: I would give it an 8 because it was really good, but way overpriced

Kelsey: 10/10, I got  ribeye and he got a filet

How would you rate the conversation 1-10?

Gavin: 10/10

Kelsey: 9-10/10

How would you rate the date overall 1-10?

Gavin: 9/10

Kelsey: 10/10

They both said that they would go on another date with one another, and ended up going together to prom!

And last, but most certainly not least, we have everyone’s favorite trope, Maddy and Jack as enemies to lovers (to enemies to lovers to enemies again). The pair were seen shelling out at Starbucks by none other than The Voice’s Maren Knutson (who thankfully avoided their gaze).

What did you talk about on the date?

Jack: We talked a lot about college, where we’re going and where our friends are going and stuff like that.

Maddy: We talked about college and prom, our friends, things like that.

Did you find out anything new about the other person?

Jack: I found out where she might go to college. Other than that no, not really.

Maddy: Yeah, I mean I learned more about his sports and he has an injury I didn’t know about, and where he’s going to college.

Was the date what you were expecting? Why or why not?

Jack: Honestly, yeah. I was expecting a nice catch-up. I wasn’t expecting anything crazy.

Maddy: I thought it was going to be awkward, but it was only a little awkward

Did anything funny happen on the date?

Jack: I think I saw Juliana’s mom walk into Starbucks, and I saw Elliot, and then I made fun of Gillette and we both laughed at that.

Maddy: Not really

How would you rate the food 1-10?

Jack: It was really bad. Like a 3.

Maddy: 9, it’s Starbucks

How would you rate the conversation 1-10?

Jack: 5-6

Maddy: 7 or 8

How would you rate the date overall 1-10?

Jack: 6

Maddy: 7

Would you go on another date with them? Why or why not?

Jack: uhhhhh, hmm, maybe

Maddy: I don’t know.

Whether they found love, everlasting, or had a quick coffee catch up, spent hundreds of dollars on a dinner and activity, or grabbed an afternoon snack, these couples had a dazzling time (or so we hope). Onward and upward, lovebirds! Enjoy your Hot Girl Summer, your long term lover, or your brand new boo thang. And a closing remark from participant, Mary V Carnell: All the seniors next year should sign up for Date Lab, and don’t just go somewhere during lunch. It was really fun.
