Op-Ed: “Why You Should Vote for Joe Biden and Save Our Democracy”

This is not a normal election. Our country has changed dramatically since the last election, and our democracy is at risk. Electing Joe Biden will restore our democracy, the most vital part of who we are as a country. Joe Biden will be coming into the presidency with a lot of things to fix. America is hurting right now; whether it is from the coronavirus or racial injustice, people are hurting. Not only has Donald Trump done nothing to help the hurting Americans, but he instead has caused more hate and chaos in our country. Biden will come into the presidency with only the best intentions for the American people, regardless of what party they belong to.

One of the most relevant issues that our country is dealing with at the moment is racial injustice towards Black people. From George Floyd to Breonna Taylor to Ahmaud Arbery, and so many more, our country has failed in creating a truly equal society. There is absolutely no excuse for the injustice Black people in our country experience on a daily basis, and our country needs to take action immediately. Electing Biden is a step in the right direction towards bringing justice to the many people in our country who have been affected by acts of hate. From the moment he takes office, Biden will work to do everything he can to move towards justice, and that alone would make me vote for him. He already has a lot of plans in place to fight injustice in our country, such as reforming the criminal justice system, as well as working to address systemic misconduct in police departments and prosecutor offices. By choosing Kamala Harris as his vice president, Biden is showing that he understands that representation matters. He is not afraid to hear the pain racism in our country has caused and find a way to fix it. As a country we have gone too long without giving the justice to Black people that they deserve. Enough is enough. While Trump supporters may not consider themselves racist, they have decided that racism is not a deal breaker, which to me is absolutely horrifying.

Another way our country is hurting is the pandemic we are currently facing, which has affected every American, costing people jobs and lives; it is no joke. President Trump's  response to the coronavirus has been inadequate, which is a direct reflection of the current president. He described the virus as a hoax early on and has chosen to ignore the advice of scientists throughout the past seven months. Biden will bring relief to people who have been put at a disadvantage because of Trump’s response to the virus. He vowed in a speech in Delaware this October to “reach out to every governor in every state, red and blue, as well as mayors and local officials, during the transition, to find out what support they need and how much of it they need.” The scientists' voices will be projected and valued, and masks will become mandated everywhere. Biden also plans to increase effectiveness and efficiency of testing for the virus, which would benefit our school community and help us to get back to normal as quickly as possible. Transparency is key when dealing with a global pandemic, and Biden will be transparent with the American people. Biden also was a key part in creating a pandemic playbook during his time as vice president to the Obama administration. The administration created the pandemic plan after Ebola hit, and Trump chose to ignore the entire plan.

Another change Biden will make as soon as he becomes president will be putting America back in the Paris Agreement, which to me is very important. The Paris Agreement is an agreement signed by most of the countries in the world, to keep the global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees celsius. If we want to stop climate change, we need to act quickly and be a part of the major plans to save our planet. Trump took us out of the Paris Agreement, making us one of the very few countries to not sign it. America is a leader to all the other countries in our world, and by not signing the Paris Agreement, there is a negative effect on the smaller countries. The smaller countries see America not joining the agreement and assume climate change is not important, which it is. Climate change is real and Biden knows that and will, with help of the scientists, do everything in his power to fix it. You may notice a common theme here: Biden believes the scientists, while Trump believes his own brain and does what is convenient to get elected.

If elected, Biden also plans on expanding on the Affordable Care Act, so every American has access to some form of affordable health care. Healthcare should be a guarantee regardless of how much money someone has, and at the moment Trump is trying to take that away. When President Obama was president, he, alongside Biden, started the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. It has helped so many people and made the healthcare process easier and more efficient. Biden will continue to build on what he and Obama started, and aim to make the healthcare system smoother and more beneficial.

As a country we have never elected a woman to be president, let alone a woman of color. We have also never elected a female vice president. Our politics have been centered around white men, and I am over it. Although Biden is a senior citizen and white, he has chosen to run with a biracial African American woman. Biden is promoting steps in the right direction to having a female president of color, and hopefully after his term is up, he will step down to let Kamala Harris run. Good leaders surround themselves with smart, good people. If elected, Biden will surround himself with the smartest and most diverse group of people he can find. Biden is not worried that the people he surrounds himself with will outshine him or correct him. He wants the best for our country and he wants to work to make our country a better place for all the people in it.

Biden will help make strides for the LGBTQ+ community as well. He believes that, “No one should be fired, denied a home or access to services because of who they are or who they love,” like he tweeted in May of 2019 when the Equality Act passed in the House of Representatives. This election is about basic human rights that every American should be granted, no`matter what. The difference between the two candidates is simple; one believes that the only people who deserve rights are white, straight men, while the other believes that every single human deserves rights. The most amazing thing about our country is that we are made up of all different people who have so many different experiences with life. This aspect of our country is what makes us unique from the rest of the world and is our greatest strength. Biden sees that, and enforces that different is good, and that to be the best America we need all races, genders, sexual orientations, religions, and backgrounds. Trump thinks that different is bad, and has a very xenophobic view on the world. If you are not a white upper class male, Trump does not have your best interest at heart. Honestly, even if you are a white upper class male Trump still does not have your best interest at heart. Trump only cares about himself, which is the exact opposite of Joe Biden.

I will let you choose, racist or not racist, homophobic or not homophobic, misognyistic or not misognyistic, xenophobic or not xenophobic, the list goes on and on. The only way to make America great again is to grant justice where needed, help our dying planet, and restore the democracy that makes America so great. Joe Biden will do this and so much more for the American people.
